Scrittore inglese (Manchester 1917 – Londra 1993). È vissuto per qualche tempo in Malesia e nel Borneo, traendone ispirazione per The Malayan trilogy (1972; tradotto in Italia col titolo Malesia!, 1981), trittico narrativo del tramontante imperialismo britannico. Deve la sua popolarità ad A clockwork orange (1962; trad. it. 1969), romanzo abilmente contesto di gergo londinese (dal quale nel 1971 S. Kubrick trasse, con la collaborazione dell’autore, il film omonimo), epopea della disumanizzazione della civiltà contemporanea. B. è considerato da certa critica inglese il narratore più dotato della sua generazione. Tra le sue opere successive: Moses (1976, poesie), Abba Abba (1977), Christ the tiger (1978), Earthly powers (1980; trad. it. 1983), The kingdom of the wicked (1985), Any old iron (1989, trad. it. 1991), The devil’s mode and other stories (1989), A dead man in Deptford (1993, trad. it. 1995). È stato autore assai fecondo, anche come critico e saggista (The novel today, 1963; The novel now, 1967; Ernest Hemingway and his world, 1978; Homage to Qwert Yuiop, 1986; A mouthful of air: language and languages, especially English, 1992), specie come studioso di Joyce, che insieme ad A. Huxley è il suo precipuo modello letterario (Here comes everybody; an introduction to James Joyce, 1963; A shorter Finnegans Wakes, 1966; An introduction to the language of James Joyce, 1972), di Shakespeare (Shakespeare, 1970; trad. it. 1981) e di D. H. Lawrence (Flame into being, 1985; trad. it. 1987). Ha pubblicato inoltre un curioso ritratto di Mozart (Mozart and the Wolf Gang, 1991; trad. it. La banda Amadeus, 1995) e i due volumi autobiografici Little Wilson and big God (1987) e You’ve had your time: being the second part of the confessions of Anthony Burgess (1990).
